Squirrels are active threw out the day except for flying squirrels which are primarily nocturnal. They have a large array of predators including hawks, cats, snakes, owls, dogs and even humans.
Though not a huge health risk, if allowed entry into an attic or crawlspace, squirrels may chew threw electrical lines causing power outage or even house fires.
It is always best to keep food sources such as acorn trees or bird feeders away or not around the home to minimize the chances of gaining entry in the attic or crawlspace.
